From his father K V Kamath got entrepreneurial spirit and from his
mother the power of introspection and looking for solutions outside the
ordinary. Both the parents taught him to aim high and achieve leadership
position in whatever you do.
“The two years at IIMA helped him to develop his skills as
business leader of the future. He became famous for his sheer brilliance on the
campus. The tale of him submitting the written analysis of communication
assignment well before the deadline and yet scoring the highest grade became
nothing short of mythical as even the best of minds struggle with these
assignments. His proficiency, diligence, and speed during those early years
stood him in good stead when he was ready to take on the world of business.
(Pota, 2010)
He joined ICICI in 1971 in the project fiancé division. He
worked as Executive Assistant to Chairman (S. S. Nadkarni), subsequently moved
to general management positions, set up ICICI’s strategic planning division and
planned its diversification into the new areas of investment banking, venture capital and credit rating. He
initiated the bank’s computerisation program. Between 1988 and 1996 Kamat worked
with ADB and a group in Indonesia and gained a lot of experience with other
countries. He rejoined ICICI in 1996 as CEO. Kamat is good example of a
leadership engine. He created an environment that made many people become CEOs
in ICICI Bank or its outfits or outside.
