K K Nair: Unedited material collected for Effective People by Prof TV Rao

Born in a humble family in Kerela, K.K Nair had faced many hardships since his childhood like not being able to get proper education and also his father losing his job when K.K.Nair was only 10. However, his thirst for knowledge and a dream to get out of Kerela and achieve something was always there in him.
He took SSC and HSC through correspondence and then went and took the bachelors’ degree. He had an option to go for IAF, but by then the call from IIM Ahmedabad had come in and so he joined there. He mentions that he was inspired by the story of Keshav Menon – the editor and founder of Matrubhoomi.
At IIM A, he was heavily influenced by his boss, Prof George, who inculcated in him the habits that he owes his success to. For example, he wanted everything to be done quick and fast without any delay. He also learnt from him that to achieve something there has to be a “willingness” to do the work and the general attitude one has towards it. He also gives credit to the conducive environment that was provided at IIM-A.
Mr Nair is of the firm belief that peer pressure and such thinks would never affect you if you are loyal to your work.
When asked about his journey at AMA and how he managed to take it to the heights he just told that he achieved it through honesty, innovativeness, having no expectations and willingness to go an extra mile. For instance, he is planning to open a facility for research and development in order to help students who are interested in research work. This shows his integrative mind set and innovativeness to go an extra mile and be at par with competitors despite being a not for profit organization.
When asked about goals in life and his opinion about them he had a very clear reply that, goals are not necessary in life. But, it is important to have passion. If you have passion, you will automatically have something to do. That something will lead to something else and so forth. All that is required is the willingness to do things without expecting anything in return. Work is how one proves oneself. If and when you get an opportunity, grab it, do it perfectly and prove yourself.  Have small goals, work towards them with integrity and passion. Large goals do not work always.
When asked that how did he managed to bring in so many well known speakers like C.K.Prahlad, Aditya  Birla etc. He said that when people see the sincerity with which someone is doing his work without any expectations they respect that and are willing to help.
He also mentioned that time management is also a very important aspect when it comes to being effective in ones work. Even after so many years his working hours are long, comprising of 10-12 hours of work were in he constantly try to make the training programmes and lectures more innovative and diverse in nature.
His advice to the younger generation with regard to being more effective at work and in life is to be sincere to their job. He also believed that upbringing of people also matters a lot.
The point and the philosophy of his life is ‘if you are honest, if you have integrity, people will recognize your efforts and grant your requests. Whatever TV Rao says about my skills to get things done, I attribute it to this value’
One needs to do constant self-analysis to discover one’s strengths and weaknesses. But, it is also important to be humble. At the same time, one should inform others about their weaknesses and help them in getting rid of it or improving it. He mentioned a few instances like when he had told the washroom cleaner at AMA that if the washroom is clean, he gets the credit. He had to keep checking the washroom again and again but he had made his point. Similarly, he had explained to the AC technician the other day that it is inefficient to keep coming and putting in complaints. He should check all the ACs and get them repaired together.
